Selling a junk car

How do I calculate the scrap value of my car?

Start with the curb weight. The owner's manual has it, or search the year, make and model. Divide by 2,000 to get tons, then multiply by what yards near you pay per ton for whole cars. A 3,200 lb sedan is 1.6 tons, and at $160 a ton that comes to $256. Recent whole-car rates in our five states run about $120 to $240 a ton, and they move with steel prices, so get a quote the week you sell. Yards take money off for missing parts, mainly the catalytic converter, and some subtract towing. A complete car, aluminum wheels or a good battery can add a little. Treat your number as the floor, not the offer.
